Skincare Products You Can Make Yourself

skincare products

People often think of skincare as shallow, based merely on appearance. But our skin is our largest organ, protecting us from toxins and other bacteria in the air. Taking care of our skin is taking care of the rest of our bodies too.

However, store-bought products often contain synthetic chemicals like parabens and synthetic fragrances we would rather not put on our skin. Fortunately, there are skincare products you can make yourself, allowing you to reap the benefits of skincare without the chemicals.

Essential Oils

Typically, we think of essential oils for their aromatherapy benefits. But many essential oils have anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties, making them perfect for tacking acne and dry skin. Good essential oils for skincare include:

  • Lavender
  • Frankincense
  • Cinnamon
  • Geranium
  • Lemongrass
  • Sandalwood
  • Chamomile

You can use essential oils as an ingredient in other skincare products. To make them, you need to acquire the plants then extract the oils. This can be done through steam distillation, though others often choose ethanol extraction. Whichever you choose, make sure you store the oil in a cool, dark place.

Sugar Scrubs

Sugar scrubs are championed in salons for their moisturizing and exfoliating properties. But sugar scrubs do more than make your skin glow. They help remove toxins your skin comes into contact with daily such as pesticides and other pollution.

To make a sugar scrub, all you need to do is combine sugar with oil. Pure cane sugar is usually the top choice, but brown sugar is better if you have sensitive skin. You can also use a variety of oils—from olive oil to avocado oil. To use it, simply apply it to the skin directly after bathing or showering to exfoliate your skin.

Body Balm

Lotions and body balms are notorious for having harmful ingredients like preservatives and alkaline-producing triethanolamine. But done right, they can offer the perfect solution for dried skin. That makes them the perfect skincare product to make yourself.

For this project, you will need a double boiler, coconut oil, shea oil, beeswax, and essential oil of your choice. Melt the oils and wax in the double boiler, then remove them from the heat. Once they are nearly cooled, add a few drops of your essential oil, then place them in a dark-colored, air-tight container. Your skin will thank you.
