A New You

Spring is the time of plans and projects – Leo Tolstoy

Spring is right around the corner which means it is time to start preparing your house, garden, and health for summer!

Spring Allergies

With April showers and May flowers, nature comes back to life and so do your spring allergies. Spring allergies can be such a pain, especially when all you want to do is be outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. But it is extremely hard to do so with a streaming nose and eyes. One of the most common causes of allergy symptoms in spring is trees and their pollen. Pollen allergies are the number one culprit for victims with itchy eyes, nose and throat.

The first step to managing allergy symptoms is prevention. Try some of these prevention tips to help keep your allergies at bay this spring.

  • Keep your windows closed to keep your house’s air as pollen free as possible.
  • Get a high-quality air filter or air purifier
  • Keep your furry friends clean as well as yourself. Take frequent showers if you have been outside to rinse the pollen from your skin and clothing
  • Wear a face mask when outside
  • Rain is the best weather for allergy victims. Avoiding early in the morning activity, when pollen is at its highest
  • Keep an eye on pollen levels through a weather station or app

If some of these tips don’t work, or you want to manage your symptoms, there are oral antihistamines, nasal sprays, and decongestants to try. If none of these techniques are working, talk to an allergist to investigate other techniques.

Immunity Garden

One of the best ways to be ready for summer is to start planning and planting your garden now. These few colder months are perfect for planting certain flora and fauna that need a good frost before they grow. Lots of these plants are also great for boosting your immunity. Planning when, where, and what you grow, will jump start the fruits of your labor come summer.

Some perfect immunity boosting plants that are also extremely easy to grow at home look like;

  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Oregano
  • Turmeric
  • Holy Basil

Mothers’ Day Health

Mother’s Day is approaching and is the perfect time to discuss women’s health awareness.  Anyone can develop iron-deficiency anemia, but those who are most susceptible are women who have menstrual cycles, are breastfeeding, or are pregnant. Most common symptoms include just not consuming enough iron, and blood loss. Whether that be through heavy periods, frequent blood donation, excess bleeding from an injury or in your urinary tract. Keeping track of your iron levels, especially if you are a woman who gets her period, is a necessity. Being iron deficient can look like fatigue, chills, weakness, dizziness, bruises, and headaches. If you start experiencing any of these symptoms or are worried about your iron levels, please talk to your doctor about solutions.
