Turmeric: The Wonder Spice

Turmeric is a spice commonly used to make sauces and delicious curry. This bright yellow- orange spice comes from the turmeric root. Aside from cooking, it’s been used as an antioxidant and as an alternative to anti-inflammatory medicine. It also provides many different uses and has been helpful in easing many different ailments.

Tea is a great way for you to get the most out of turmeric. It’s also one of the most popular ways turmeric is used when it comes to using it as alternative medicine. Here are some common benefits for using turmeric.

1. Boost immune system.

Because of all the medicinal properties in turmeric, it has a high chance of boosting your immune system and moderating it as well. So if you find yourself feeling like you you’re coming down with something or if you’re constantly coming down with something, drink turmeric tea everyday.

2. Helps prevent cancer.

Despite the human studies being in very early stages, other lab and animal studies have been showing some promising effects of curcumin in preventing cancer. Curcumin is the compound responsible for the bright color as well as many health effects.

3. Protects the brain.

Aside from curcumin, there is another compound that’s being studied: aromatic turmerone or ar-turmerone. This compound helps promote repairs to stem cells in your brain. Because of this, turmeric inadvertently also helps prevent Alzheimer’s and other diseases like stroke.

4. Wards off heart attack.

Again, we can thank curcumin. A study in 2012 followed 121 patients who were going to undergo bypass surgery. Half took curcumin capsules while the other half had placebo pills. Results show that taking curcumin capsules lowers the chance of a heart attack for bypass patients by 65 percent.

5. Curb heartburn and a tummy ache.

Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, taking supplements made out of the turmeric plants really work well with people suffering from indigestion and heartburn.

6. Prevent and delay diabetes.

Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties have been found to be the cause of the delayed onset of Type 2 diabetes in a study done in 2012. A group of people with prediabetes were given either curcumin or placebo capsules. None of the people who took the curcumin capsules were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. But by the end of the study, about 16 percent of those who weren’t taking them were diagnosed with it.

7. Alleviate joint pain.

It’s been mentioned a few times how curcumin has anti-inflammatory powers. Because of this, there have been several studies about how the health benefits of turmeric could benefit patients who have joint pain or arthritis. Make Turmeric Tea

What you need:

  • Turmeric Powder
  • Honey
  • Fresh squeezed lemon
  • Milk


  1. Boil 4 cups of water.
  2. Add 2 teaspoons of turmeric.
  3. Leave it to simmer for 8 minutes.
  4. Strain the tea.
  5. Add the honey, lemon, and milk to taste. You could also use orange juice if you?re out of lemons.

Blend turmeric into your daily power smoothie.

What you need:

  • 2 tablespoons almond butter
  • 1 large handful of spinach and collards (chopped)
  • 1 frozen banana (cut)
  • 1 cup unsweetened coconut water
  • 1 tablespoon flax oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon


  1. Add all the ingredients into a blender and continue to puree until all of the greens have been pulverized.

What you need:

  • 8 ounces chicken tenders (bite size chunks)
  • 2 chopped plum tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons ozo
  • 1 1/2 cups baby spinach
  • 1 14 ounce can of chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon extra- virgin olive oil
  • 1 small zucchini (finely diced)
  • 1 large shallot (finely chopped)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning blend
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 cup dry white wine


  1. Get a large saucepan over medium- high heat and heat the oil.
  2. Add the chicken, sprinkle the turmeric, and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned and cooked. Set aside.
  3. Add the zucchini, shallot, Italian seasoning, and salt for about 2 to 3 minutes or until the vegetables are slightly soft.
  4. Throw in the tomatoes, broth, wine, and orzo.
  5. Bring to a boil and stir occasionally.
  6. Reduce to a simmer until pasta is tender then add in the spinach.
  7. Stir in the chicken and its accumulated juices.
  8. Constantly stir for about 2 minutes.
