How to Create a Mindful Approach to Your Health

When does your health matter? Never more than the here and now, right? So it makes sense to take a mindful approach to your health.

Mindfulness is the practice of living in the current moment. This means that your mind and body are both fully in the present. You?re not wondering what will happen next or dwelling on an earlier conversation. You are fully experiencing everything this moment has to offer. You?re aware of all the sights, sounds, smells and sensations. You are mindful.

But when you start thinking of mindfulness as a tool, you can apply it to all areas of your life. Health is a great place to start.

Here are some tips for creating a mindful approach to your health.

Take a mindful moment right now

Read this paragraph, and then pause for about two minutes for a mindfulness moment. In this time, you?ll focus on your body in this moment. How does it feel to live in this body of yours? Are you carrying around extra weight? Focus your attention on your right (or left) bicep. Flex your muscle and pay close attention to how that feels. That?s just one muscle set of many that are responsible for your body?s movement. We often take things like this for granted. Now is a great time to appreciate the miracle that is your body. Don?t worry if it sounds cheesy. It?s important to recognize and appreciate all the things your body does well.

Be mindful in your decisions

Whenever you?re faced with a decision about your physical health, remember to be mindful. Take another mindful moment. Then answer the question, is this decision helping or hurting my body?

To achieve true health, we must be mindful. Any decisions should be about what your body needs instead of what your mind wants. If you?ve ever spent time stressing over something for no reason, you know how the mind can lead you astray.

Interestingly, being mindful about your physical health is about paying more attention to your body than your mind. Let?s say your mind reminds you to have a glass of wine at the same time every night. The clock strikes 6 and you?re ready to crack open a bottle. Stop for a minute and be mindful of what you?re doing. Is this a conscious decision or a bad habit? Is it good for your body or harmful?

If you find that it?s a habit, try to stop. And if you can?t stop, seek alcohol treatment. You may be hovering around addiction, and that could be difficult to overcome with mindfulness alone.

Nourish your spiritual health

The best way to approach mindfulness is through meditation. Think of meditation like mindfulness training. You?re training your mind to stay in the present moment instead of wandering between the past and future.

This can take a while to master, but you?ll get better with practice. The more you meditate, the easier you?ll find mindfulness in other areas of your life.
