Essential oils have been used for centuries as a way to treat ailments, clean, and boost health. That being said, if you’re new to essential oils, you might still have some things to learn. Transitioning to a chemical-free home is an exciting undertaking, but it can be overwhelming if you don’t know where to begin.

From how to properly use essential oils to must-have tricks, here are the top essential oil tips you need for your home. There’s so much you can do once you unleash the power of essential oil.

1. Be Careful Where You Use Them

Safety always comes first. Always be extra careful about where exactly you use essential oils. Many first-time oil users are surprised to learn they can’t be applied just anywhere. For instance, oils that are fine for your arm might not be safe to put inside your mouth, nose, or near your eyes.

Some examples of oils you should be careful with are peppermint and lemongrass, but always check your particular oil before applying them to sensitive areas. Finally, make sure to always properly dilute essential oils so they aren’t too strong.

2. Check Your Oil Quality

Unfortunately, not all essential oils are created equally. You need to find a trusted producer. Trusted producers will make oils that are free of additives. A lot of over-the-counter oils you’ll find at drug stores and other locations will have added ingredients, and these can cause an allergic reaction.

3. Beware the Expiration Date

Did you know essential oils expire? While it’s easy to see why people think essential oils last forever, this simply isn’t true. Just like most things you keep in your medicine cabinet, they have a shelf life

In general, you can keep oils for up to 3 years. After 3 years, they’re more likely to be exposed to oxygen over time, lowering their effectiveness. If you ever notice any strange smells, discoloration, and so on with your current oils, they might be expired.

Then, clip the pin to the underside of your floor vents. When your heating or air conditioning turns on, your entire home will start smelling great. Just make sure the oil you choose is safe for any young kids, pets, or plants in your home.

5. Bring it With You
