How to Clean Your Invisalign Products

Invisalign Aligners

Invisalign products help to straighten your teeth. For them to work properly, it’s essential that both the teeth and the aligners are kept as clean as possible. If you’ve purchased any Rockwall Invisalign® products, you’ll need to know how to clean them properly so they can last for a long time. The proprietary cleaning system recommended is quite expensive and available in limited areas. However, there are simpler ways of caring for your Invisalign product, and these can be practiced anywhere in the world.

Brushing the Invisalign Trays

To do this properly, remove the Invisalign from your teeth according to the instructions given by your dentist. Invisalign trays must be cleaned on the outside of the mouth, which is quite different from metal braces. Brush the aligner using a soft toothbrush and toothpaste, just as you would if it was your own teeth. Clean it thoroughly, ensuring you brush away all the food particles stuck on both sides of the aligner.

Use a steady stream of warm water to rinse off any mouthwash and toothpaste from the aligner. Dry the aligner on a clean towel before putting it back into your mouth. Avoid rinsing the Invisalign aligner with hot water as this could melt it and cause permanent damage. Some dentists advise that you avoid using toothpaste as some of them often contain abrasive ingredients that leave scratches on your trays. These scratches will become more visible over time. You can brush with warm water only or using a mild dish detergent.

Ensure you brush and floss your teeth while the Invisalign is out of the mouth. This helps you prevent bacteria and food particles from hiding in your teeth. Once dried, insert the aligners back onto your teeth.

Vibratory Baths

Vibratory retainer baths are ultrasonic cleaning systems that work with soluble crystals, and create a cleansing solution that helps to dislodge bacteria. It helps remove stubborn microorganisms that cannot be ordinarily removed by brushing. Once you’ve purchased it, fill the vibratory bath with warm water up to the amount suggested in the instructions. Put the required amount of crystals in the water and let them dissolve. Some crystals come pre-measured in tablets and packets, but you can also measure them yourself.

Add your aligners in the water and let it soak for about fifteen minutes. While waiting, brush your teeth and floss to remove hidden food particles on your teeth. The aligners can only be as clean as your teeth. Because the cleansing solution is intended only for the aligners, ensure you rinse it before inserting it back in your mouth. This will help minimize chances of an allergic reaction from the ingredients. Ensure you rinse the sonic bath as well as your hands. Once you’re done, you can re-insert the Invisaligns back into your mouth.

Homemade Soaks

You can use hydrogen peroxide to remove bacteria. Soak your aligners in warm water with hydrogen peroxide and wait for about half an hour. It’s important to note that the hydrogen peroxide will not remove plaque buildup.

You can also use vinegar solution to remove tartar and kill microorganisms. Submerge your aligners in warm water mixed with vinegar and wait for twenty to thirty minutes. Rinse the aligners in warm water and brush gently with a soft toothbrush, to remove the smell of vinegar. Always ensure that you brush and floss your teeth before inserting the aligners.
