A decrease in temperature, reduced sunlight, and cold snow underneath our shoes are all great signs of winter. However, for some of us, anxiety, depression, and exhaustion are also synonymous with the change in season. About 14 percent of the US population experiences the winter blues, or a type of Seasonal Affective Disorder brought on by an absence of light during the winter. The winter blues can leave us feeling fatigued, exhausted, depressed, and moody, so that it’s sometimes hard to enjoy the holiday season. However, you can fight back against the symptoms with these delicious foods.

Vitamin D

Typically absorbed through sunlight, Vitamin D becomes extremely depleted during cold, winter months. Therefore, you need to increase your intake of Vitamin D to increase your energy levels, promote good vibes, strengthen your immunity system, and ultimately avoid the costs of visiting a doctor. You can replenish your Vitamin D levels by eating dairy products, yolk, salmon, tuna, and oranges.

Lean Proteins

High saturated fat is not good for your mood or your body. Therefore, you should try to eat as many lean proteins as you can. Meats such as salmon and chicken breasts are packed with amino acids that can make your feel happier. Lean proteins also provide your body with energy which can prevent fatigue and make you feel positively refreshed.

Instead of binging on cookies and donuts, opt for dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is rich in polyphenol, which is an antioxidant that works to improve our mood. You can even have some dark hot cocoa to brighten and warm up your cold wintery nights.

After a wonderful Thanksgiving meal, do you find yourself feeling sluggish and tired? This is because of the effects of turkey. Turkey contains the amino acid, tryptophan, and melatonin which are chemicals that make us calm and relaxed. If you eat turkey during times of stress or restlessness, the chemicals will work fast to make you less stressed and sleepy.
