5 Ways To Be Less Stressed

If suffering from stress has become a standard part of your life, so much so that you are used to it and can’t think of or remember a time when you weren’t feeling this way, don’t worry – things can change for the better. Everyone gets stressed on occasion and that is perfectly natural; our bodies are designed to cope with this eventuality and release hormones to help us stay safe until the worry or danger has passed. The problem comes when the worry doesn’t pass and is constant, meaning that our stress levels are chronically high. This can lead to all kinds of physical problems including heart disease, high blood pressure, ulcers, and mental health issues such as depression.

It is clearly important to reduce the stress in our lives as much as possible, especially if you are already suffering from one of the conditions already mentioned. This is not always going to be something that is easy and can be done overnight, but there are ways to help.

  1. Remove The Stressors

Perhaps the most obvious and yet potentially the most difficult way to reduce your stress levels is to remove the stressors in your life so that they are no longer worrying you. This isn’t always going to be possible without some help of some kind, but the first step is to work out what it is that is causing you stress. There are many things in life that people find stressful, from money matters to work to relationships to grief and more.

Once you have discovered the reason for your stress you can work on eliminating it from your life is at all possible. Perhaps you determine that you want a new career, or that you need to speak to your partner about something that is bothering you. When you reduce or eliminate the stressors in your life, you will automatically feel less stressed.

  1. Have A Massage

A massage is a lovely way to feel less stressed. Don’t worry if it seems a little selfish or even self-indulgent to book yourself a massage or an entire spa day if that’s what you need and want. When it comes to your health, you need to do what is best, and that could indeed be a massage. Massages work in two ways. The first is that they help to re-balance the hormone levels in your body. This means that the levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, and the happy hormone, serotonin (amongst many other hormones) will even out, and you will feel better for it.

Massages also help to relieve pain and tension within the muscles by loosening them. You will then be able to move more freely without pain. Since pain causes stress which then tightens up the muscles and causes even more pain (and therefore it is a never-ending cycle), the less pain you are feeling, the better when it comes to stress levels.

  1. Soak In The Tub

There will have been times when you have come home from work, school, or just put the kids to bed after a long, tiring day and you’ve felt like a soak in a warm, bubbly bathtub is the ideal solution. The good news is that this is ideal – a good soak in the tub is a great way to reduce stress and tension and to make yourself feel so much better about everything that is happening around you. The important point to note is that the water shouldn’t be too hot; hot water will raise your blood pressure and not only will your stress not decrease, but you’ll also feel unwell on top of everything else.

Warm water is the best option as this will help to increase your blood flow around your body which will help to sooth any pain that you might be experiencing. You will then feel relaxed and your stress levels will diminish. To make things even more relaxing, add aromatherapy oils or bubble bath solution, and include candles in there is room to do so safely. When you get out of the tub, you’ll feel happier and much more relaxed, and the problems you were experiencing will seem much smaller.

  1. Try Meditation

Meditation is something that many people find is the perfect way to relax and de-stress. If you have never tried it before it can feel strange at first, but once you get used to it and understand just how good it can make you feel, you will soon start to become better at it and do it more and more.

To truly meditate well, you need to ensure your mind is as blank as possible, and this is where people struggle to begin with; there always seems to be something to think about or worry about. However, that is the point of meditation – when done right, you will no longer be able to worry about anything that is happening in your life because your mind will be blank, and you won’t be thinking about anything.

Because there are so many different meditation techniques, it may take a while to find the one that works best for you, but when you do and you are able to try it for just 10 minutes each day, you will be amazed at the difference it can make to how stressed (or not) you feel.

  1. Regular Exercise

We know that we need to carry out regular exercise if we want to keep our bodies healthy, but did you also know that you can feel less stressed after exercise too? This is because, much like with meditation, you will be entirely focused on the task you are carrying out, and you won’t have any room for negative, worrying thoughts. This allows your mind to relax. Your body, in the meantime, is producing positive hormones which help to block out the negative ones that can contribute to your high-stress levels.
